Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson who were both lawyers. The couple moved to Oxfordshire when she was five and enrolled in the Dragon School. Emma was aspired to become an actor from the age of aged six. She studied at Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Oxford, an acting school with part-time courses. From the age of 10 she was involved as the lead in numerous Stagecoach School plays and productions. Casting began in 1999 to cast Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the movie adaptation of British author J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was discovered by agents through the recommendation of her Oxford teacher. David Heyman told Emma along together with Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe that they had all been through 8 consecutive auditions. Emma's first film appearance came with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2002). It broke all records in beginning-day and weekend-opening sales as well as being the most-grossing feature of 2001. Reviewers were awed by the performance of the film as well as its story. The Daily Telegraph, a popular British publication, has praised Emma for her exceptional performance. Emma was later awarded five prizes in recognition of her work in the movie.
